LG Optimus G Pro specification review

LG Optimus G Pro is one of LG’s newest arrivals in India (launched on 4th July, 2013). Let us see what this handset has in store for us.

Design

The whole device is packed in a frame with mildly eccentric corners. For sporting a 5.5 inch screen, the device is very light, thanks to it’s composition being mainly plastic. In addition to this LG has done a really good job in restricting the size of the handset, the device feels and looks smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which has the same size of screen diagonal. The reason for this happens to be it’s more longitudinal structure and smaller side bezels. Up front the device flaunts a 5.5 inch display and a characteristic home button like many other handsets and a secondary camera. The rear is occupied by the primary shooter. Many users will enjoy the sturdy replaceable back cover and battery. Removing the back cover gives you access to microSD and micro SIM slots. the left side of this device has something interesting, a special button which can be set to quick launch any application of your choice.

The left side also has a volume control. The right hand side seats the necessary power button. All buttons are pretty easy to locate and are very responsive. A good innovation in this device would be the home button LED, the narrow home button at the bottom is actually bordered by LED, this glows in various colours to notify you about different things like missed calls, messages etc. The top of this phone has an audio jack and an infrared sensor, more on that later. The bottom seats the USB port to connect to a computer or for charging.

LG Optimus G Pro-1

Display

The device houses a 5.5 inch Full HD ( 1920 x 1080 pixels ) True IPS Plus display. The ppi will definitely be lower than the 5 inch HD phones, but anything above 400 ppi should render crisp images on the screen, this device has 401 ppi. However it smokes the 5.5 inch ( 1280 x 720 pixels ) display of Galaxy Note 2 by a huge margin in terms of ppi. The true IPS LCD display gets rid of that bluish tinge that you find in many Super AMOLED displays. The display is bright enough to be legible in direct sunlight too. For a big display, the phone has good viewing angles, text is clearly visible at angles as low as 15 degrees. What might irritate users is the slow response of the automatic brightness feature. In other words, the display takes some time to adjust to surrounding light.

Processor and Performance

The device comes with a powerful 1.7 GHz Snapdragon 600 Quad-core processor, same as the HTC One. This processor is beautifully complemented by the Adreno 320 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. The combined result of all this is an impressive benchmark score of around 11900 leading the HTC One at 11850 marginally and trailing the Samsung Galaxy S4 at 12400. Surprisingly, due to good optimization by LG, it feels a bit faster than the S4 and beats Galaxy Note 2 by a huge margin. Applications open in no time and multitasking is fluid. There are no stutters while browsing or reading PDF’s or Ebooks, images load quickly and pinch to zoom is very fluid.

LG Optimus G Pro-5

Camera

The LG Optimus G Pro has a 13 MP Primary camera which can record Full HD videos. Camera does take good snaps in broad daylight but the problem comes in low lit places where the colours are somewhat washed out. In addition to this the flash is not the brightest we have seen. As a result, the camera does not perform as well as those found in the HTC One or the Samsung Galaxy S4. That being said, the video recording on this is quite spot on. In addition to this the device also has a 2.1 MP front facing camera also capable of Full HD video recording at 30 fps, no complaints here.

The camera UI is rather simple with options like normal mode, HDR mode and intelligent auto mode, which automatically adjusts exposure levels. It has a quick toggle between video mode and camera mode. There are also various image editing options.

LG Optimus G Pro-6

User Interface and Software

LG brings it’s own flavor to the stock android UI with a simple yet elegant Optimus UI. Since it has a 5.5 inch display, LG decided to enable landscape mode  for the home screens as well. The newer Optimus UI on the Optimus G Pro does not look as cartoony as the previous versions, we would love to see more delicate touches on the keyboard and dial pad though. The notification bar is well equipped with all possible shortcuts to settings, WiFi, Bluetooth, data etc. LG also takes a leaf out of Sony’s book by introducing something called slide apps which are very similar to Sony’s small apps. These apps appear over any application running in the background in a windowed style, the cool thing is you can watch a video while doing something else in the background, you can also adjust transparency. Some may question the practicality of all this, but it is always good to have new interesting features.

The device comes pre loaded with LG’s stock apps like the camera app, the music app etc. What’s interesting is the Quick memo app which lets you take notes even if you are in an app and captures a screenshot, this becomes useful when there is a need to circle something in a document or a location in google maps. In addition to this there is a dedicated app which lets you control your TV, air conditioner etc via the infrared blaster on the top of the handset.

Other device suited modifications include that of the keyboard, it can be compressed and moved to the right or left for one handed use. One more cool feature is you can set menu button LED notifications through settings.

LG Optimus G Pro-7

Sound Quality

The speaker sound quality on this device is not as good as the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the HTC One. It is not the best in terms of loudness and clarity, still beats many others. On headphones, it does give a good audio output trailing the HTC One in terms of base and tonal quality.

Memory

The device comes equipped with every possible way to get maximum storage. It has an internal 16/32 GB internal storage depending on the model. This can be expanded via microSD to about 64 GB. In addition to this, the 2 GB of RAM does it’s job to boost performance, this really shows while multitasking, you experience zero lag.

Connectivity

The handset is bundled with connectivity options such as WiFi, WiFi Direct, Bluetooth and Infrared. The device experiences no gimmicks connecting with ease to any WiFi connection. Signal reception is good at most places. The earpiece volume is not the best around. Sadly, the Indian version does not have LTE.

LG Optimus G Pro-8

Battery

We are happy to see a 3140 mAh removable battery. It does well enough to power the massive display for about a day, if you are a heavy user. There is also an option for a Battery saver mode, which looks similar to the stamina mode found in the new Xperias.

Xolo Q600 specification review

Xolo releases it’s very own 4.5 inch smartphone Xolo Q600, making it one among many others out there. This is a closer take on important assets of this smartphone.

XOLO Q600 1

Design

The phone has a pretty interesting design which gives it a Pseudo- premium feel in spite of being made of plastic. Design is certainly one aspect which makes Xolo phones stand out. The edges are majestically curved and taper to the rear panel. The rear is occupied by the primary camera, LED flash and a rear speaker strip. The front is occupied by a 4.5 inch display, the LED buttons and the front facing camera.

Processor

Nothing new here, it is going to sport the same 1.2 GHz Media Tek chipset as other budget Quad-cores. Should be pretty powerful for the not-so-demanding display.

Display

The 4.5 inch FWVGA ( 854 x 480 pixels) display occupies a lions share of the front side of the device. It is a display with a respectable 217 ppi, which is not the best out there.

XOLO Q600 2Camera

The rear is studded with a 5 MP camera and an LED flash, not the best in the market but justifies the price tag. It has a 0.3 MP front shooter like other budget phones.

Memory

The device comes with a respectable 512 MB of RAM. This gets coupled with an adequate 4 GB of internal memory for this price. This can be expanded by virtue of a microSD slot up to 32 GB.

Connectivity

Connectivity should be plenty with 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth. There is a provision for Dual-SIM just to spice up the connectivity options.

Software

The phone will run Android 4.2 JellyBean out of the box. It comes with Xolo’s lightly themed custom UI. It also comes with the Xolo Secure app which lets you lock your phone and track it if it gets lost. In addition to this it also comes with a swype keyboard.

Battery

The 2000 mAh battery is surprisingly good for the screen resolution and size. It gives 13 hrs of talktime on 2G and around 10 hrs of talktime on 3G.

Conclusion

Overall, the phone is a good package that totally justifies it’s price tag of just Rs 8,999.

Xolo Q600 lowest online price in India:

Xolo q600 is available on online retail store Snapdeal for Rs.8749.

Micromax Canvas 4 price and specifications leak again with more details

The specifications for the much-awaited Micromax Canvas 4 smartphone have surfaced yet again, this time from AndroidOS.in website. Micromax might have put up the phone for pre-order on June 28 itself, but the exact specifications are still a mystery. Their e-Store doesn’t reflect much details about the phone as of yet.

The latest leaked specifications of Micromax Canvas 4 are:

  • Display: 5-inch 720p IPS display, instead of the 1080p resolution reported earlier

  • Processor: MediaTek (MT6589) quad-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, instead of the 2.0 GHz quad-core Cortex A7 quad-core processor

  • RAM: 1 GB; it was reported to be 2 GB earlier

  • Storage: 16 GB internal storage with microSD card support for up to 32 GB external memory; internal storage was leaked to be 8 GB earlier

  • Primary Camera: 13 MP; same as before

  • Secondary Camera: 5 MP; there was doubt before between 3.2 MP and 5 MP

  • Thickness: 8.9 mm

  • Weight: 145 g

  • Operating System: Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)

  • Battery: 2,000 mAh; it was leaked to be 3,000 mAh earlier

All these specs point towords the BLU Life One, which was launched in April this year.  Perhaps this is a re-branded version of the same phone sold in India. The BLU Life One is priced at 230 EUR, which translates to around 17,700 INR.

Thin and slim!

Thin and slim!

The specifications seem to be a lot less powerful when compared to the ones leaked before. It is not yet known how reliable their “trusted sources” are, but the new specifications at least make sense when seen from a price to performance point-of-view. Though this phone is hyped up to be a high-end flagship from Micromax, they surely cannot make it so powerful that customers have to pay a premium for it.

The price of this smartphone is expected to lie in between 16,000 and 17,000 Indian rupees; the final price would be made public on 8th July when the phone would finally launch. The website also reports that Micromax is in a fix to price it competitively, but can’t due to the value of rupee deprecating.

Sony Xperia i1 Honami shows up in alleged press images

If you ever see images of a handset leak out every other day, it means that handset is going to be really good. It is astonishing to see so many leaks of the Sony Xperia i1 Honami this week. What you saw a few days ago was just an appetizer, this is the main course. The alleged  press leaks do give an idea on how the phone looks up front. This time it is gsmarena who came up with the press leaks. These images came out of a system dump. Since the images came out of a system dump, they are most probably prototypes of the actual handset. We would love to see images revealing the rear of the device, but not today. The press images show the international and Japanese Docomo variant.

Micromax Canvas A92 Lite goes online for pre-order at Rs.8499

Micromax Canvas A92 Lite has been released online on Flipkart. And within hours of its release, the phone has gone out of stock! It sports a 1Ghz dual core processor and a 5″ screen putting it right there with other phablets. Also it has a thickness of 10.8mm considering the fact that it is a Dual SIM phone. The phone looks really stunning and the camera flash on typical smartphones is in a square shape but the one on this is in a shape of a thin rectangle. Only concern is whether this design mantra would adverse affect the quality of lighting delivered. This phone has a really cook and sleek look going.

Micromax-A92-Canvas-Lite

Micromax Canvas A92 Lite Specifications:

  • 5″ screen with IPS display.

  • Resolution is a 480×854 and 196PPI

  • 1GHz Dual core processor

  • 512MB of RAM (The only drawback)

  • 5MP rear camera with LED flash (Design factor)

  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS

  • Connectivity wise, it supports 3G ,WiFi, Bluetooth and also aGPS.

  • 2000 mAh battery (Should be capable of doing justice to its core)

  • Dual SIM (GSM+GSM)

  • Internal memory of 4GB , expandable up to 32GB via microSD.

Conclusion:

Personally I feel this is the most extreme level of budgeting. A little while ago if someone had told me the features and asked to guess the price I’d have said a figure of Rs.15k minimum. But Micromax has achieved to fit all this into a neat and tidy budget of Rs.8499. This is not only making smartphones accessible to the common man but is also taunting its competitors with the challenge being placed in front of them that Micromax will provide all the features they are providing at almost half the price. This is questioning the giants whether they are making us pay purely for the brand name.

Stock Android can now be installed on standard HTC One and Galaxy S4

HTC_One_homescreen

Yesterday, the Google Play Editions of  HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 went on sale, and just earlier in the day today, Samsung and HTC released the GPL-compliant source-code for their respective stock Android devices. It has not taken long for the fans to repackage the firmware to run on standard editions of these phones.

The source code for the HTC One was released via HTCDev and Samsung released it through their Open Source Release Centre. The first repackaged firmwares of the Google Edition devices have now surfaced in XDA-Developers forums.

The repackaged HTC One Google Play Edition firmware comes with busybox pre-installed, and it remains Odexed; so boot times should be more fast and secure. An unlocked device can easily be flashed with this ROM through a custom recovery. It is recommended that you factory reset your device before you commence with the flashing, and it is mandatory if you are coming from another custom ROM.

Similarly, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 has also seen a number of builds dumped by various XDA forum members. There are more than 4 builds for the GS4, some more functional than the others in some respects. The same steps apply to to flash the stock firmware. Sony is also planning to release a Google Edition of Xperia Z. Hopefully, that happens soon enough and all the top flagships of Android can finally be free of their customised skins.

Users can now finally experience Android on non-Nexus devices the way it was meant to be experienced.
