The first Mozilla Firefox OS smartphone ZTE Open on sale in Spain, other countries to follow soon

ZTE Open Different Views

Mozilla has announced today that the first smartphone running the Firefox OS — the ZTE Open and the Alcatel One Touch Fire  — will be going on sale soon. The new mobile OS is completely powered by open web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript, and is designed specifically to take advantage of low-end hardware while still delivering on performance.

The Firefox OS features every basic functionality that one expects in a smartphone: calls, messaging, browser, camera, music player, email, social networking (Facebook, Twitter) and much more. Mozilla has also included HERE maps with offline capabilities for navigation purposes. The apps for this OS will be distributed through the newly launched Firefox Marketplace. Some of the early apps that users can expect to find on the marketplace are AccuWeather, Poppit (game), Facebook, Twitter, Nokia HERE Maps, Terra, SoundCloud, Time Out and TMZ. Other local apps will also be available to users of a particular region.

The ZTE Open will go on sale tomorrow in Spain through Telefonica owned Movistar, a major Spanish mobile phone operator. The ZTE Open will cost €69 (Rs.5,341) for prepaying customers. Apart from ZTE and Alcatel, Huawei and LG are also going to announce their devices based on Firefox OS soon. Sony is also planning to release a Firefox OS based smartphone in 2014. The specifications of these devices aren’t out in the open as of yet, but this should hardly matter consider the market that is being targeted.

The first wave of Firefox OS devices will be available to consumers in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela. Additional markets will be announced soon.

It is clear that Mozilla is targeting low-end smartphones such as Asha and cheap Android phones with the Firefox OS. Nokia’s Asha 501 was launched in India recently and it runs on the Asha platform. Low-end Android phones don’t perform well and lag a lot while running apps, but even they’re picking up in performance as hardware costs are coming down. It remains to be seen what effect a smartphone OS from a non-profit organization will bring to the table.

Micromax Canvas A92 Lite goes online for pre-order at Rs.8499

Micromax Canvas A92 Lite has been released online on Flipkart. And within hours of its release, the phone has gone out of stock! It sports a 1Ghz dual core processor and a 5″ screen putting it right there with other phablets. Also it has a thickness of 10.8mm considering the fact that it is a Dual SIM phone. The phone looks really stunning and the camera flash on typical smartphones is in a square shape but the one on this is in a shape of a thin rectangle. Only concern is whether this design mantra would adverse affect the quality of lighting delivered. This phone has a really cook and sleek look going.

Micromax-A92-Canvas-Lite

Micromax Canvas A92 Lite Specifications:

  • 5″ screen with IPS display.

  • Resolution is a 480×854 and 196PPI

  • 1GHz Dual core processor

  • 512MB of RAM (The only drawback)

  • 5MP rear camera with LED flash (Design factor)

  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS

  • Connectivity wise, it supports 3G ,WiFi, Bluetooth and also aGPS.

  • 2000 mAh battery (Should be capable of doing justice to its core)

  • Dual SIM (GSM+GSM)

  • Internal memory of 4GB , expandable up to 32GB via microSD.

Conclusion:

Personally I feel this is the most extreme level of budgeting. A little while ago if someone had told me the features and asked to guess the price I’d have said a figure of Rs.15k minimum. But Micromax has achieved to fit all this into a neat and tidy budget of Rs.8499. This is not only making smartphones accessible to the common man but is also taunting its competitors with the challenge being placed in front of them that Micromax will provide all the features they are providing at almost half the price. This is questioning the giants whether they are making us pay purely for the brand name.

Nokia Asha 210 finally makes it to markets for pre-order at Rs.4499

This model has Dual SIM support and at the same time the dedicated WhatsApp button has been replaced by a dedicated Facebook button instead. But holding a screen of 2.4″ the phone also has some pretty good features.

Nokia-Asha-210-Dual-SIM

Nokia Asha 210 Specifications:

  • 2MP rear camera

  •  Weighs a mere 97.3 grams which is light!

  • QWERTY keyboard

  • Dedicated WhatsApp/Facebook button and dedicated Camera button.

Nokia Asha 210 video:

Conclusion:

This phone is an amazing achievement in the hands of Nokia. Their chance at hitting the market against other competitors seems good, keeping in perspective that this phone is dedicated to WhatsApp and Facebook users. For all those social junkies out there who always want to be connected and don’t want to spend as much as spending on an Android phone, this is a very good alternative. For them this phone is a colorful blessing in disguise.

Huawei officially launches Ascend P6 with quad-core CPU@1.5Ghz!

Huawei showed off its Ascend P6 today at a press conference that was held at London. The main form factor of the phone is that it is a mere 6.18 mm thick which makes it the slimmest smartphone in the market as quoted by the company. The build is really very elegant looking and the metallic body is a major plus to the looks.

Huawei Ascend P6 specifications:

  • The screen sported is a 4.7 inch in cell LCD.

  • Resolution is a 720p (not good but not bad either)

  • Huawei’s K3V2 chip-set will be used

  • It sports a 1.5Ghz Quad-core cortex A9 processor

  • 2GB of RAM

  • Rear Camera is an 8MP (BSI, F2.0) which is capable of recording videos at 1080p, and the front camera is a 5 MP camera to ensure all those clear self-portraits and video calls.

  • The battery is 2000mAh which according to screen size and a quad-core processor has got me worried to doubt whether it’ll manage to last a day. Unless the company really does something with power-saving software or a measure like putting those power thirsty cores to sleep when not required.

  •  8GB expandable internal storage

  • Connectivity manages a 3G,WiFi (not dual band),Bluetooth 3.0.

  • It will run on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

  • And will be topped with the Huawei Emotion UI.

  • Dual SIM with dual standby support.

Huawei Ascend P6 release date:

The phone is expected to release in China this month while it is rumored to get to western Europe by the end of July, which will then be followed by the rest of the markets.

Conclusion:

We feel the phone has been a bit overpriced for what they are offering. According to PCAdvisor, the Ascend P6 will be available for approx.  Rs.41,000 (converted from 450 Pounds) with VAT.  The main issue i’d face is with the connectivity options. They really should have included 4G LTE to keep in competition with other smartphones in the market. The rest of the equipment the phone is running is brilliant. Maybe the company plans on selling another successor of this phone soon with expected loaded features. But really cant blame the company. How much can they possibly fit into something that is 6.18mm thick, thickness being one of the main USPs of the phone.

The  HTC website quotes that you dont have to pay premium prices for getting an incredible HTC smartphone. Which tells us that it is not only going to be cheap but at the same time it is going to give us premium smartphone features (like the last cookie in the jar).

Conclusion:

We feel this is really an amazing attempt by HTC to provide a budget smartphone to people out there who don’t want to spend too much on a premium phone. Also I personally feel that the phone will sell like hot cakes because of the design factor and build quality.
